Welcome back for the semester! The start of a new term often brings an increase in cybersecurity threats, and we’ve recently seen an uptick in phishing attempts targeting our campus community. As we settle into new schedules and reconnect with colleagues and classmates, it’s important that digital safety remains a top priority.
To help keep your accounts (and our community) safe, please take a moment to review the reminders below.
Only Approve a Microsoft Authentication Request That You Initiate
Microsoft authentication (Microsoft Authenticator and/or text message verification codes) helps prevent unauthorized logins, but it’s not foolproof. If you receive an authentication prompt or verification code that you did not request, do not approve it.
-
The Tactic: Attackers may try to sign in using a stolen password and then “push” repeated authentication prompts or trigger verification codes, hoping you’ll approve one just to make it stop.
-
The Rule: If you aren’t actively trying to log in, never approve an authentication request and never share a verification code.
If you think someone may have your password, change your password immediately and contact the Solution Center.
The JC Solution Center Will Never Ask for Your Account Credentials or Verification Codes by Phone, Email, or Google Form
Phishing scams often use urgency, claiming your account will be locked, your email will be disabled, or action is required immediately. These messages may link to a “login page” or “verification form” that looks official but is designed to steal your username, password, and other personal information.
If you clicked a link or entered your credentials, change your password immediately and contact the Solution Center.
-
The Tactic: Fake forms and look-alike login pages are designed to appear legitimate, so you’ll enter your information without thinking twice.
-
The Rule: The JC Solution Center will never ask you to provide your password or authentication/verification codes through email, phone, text, Google Forms, shared documents, or external links.
If you have questions or need assistance, please contact the Solution Center at 517.796.8639.
Thank you for being vigilant and helping keep Jackson College secure.
