How to Configure Inbox Rules in Outlook

 

 

 

About Inbox Rules
Inbox rules are an automated way to conviently organize your inbox. They can be set up to filter incoming mail by sender, subject, message content, etc.

 

How to Set Them Up
With the launch of ‘Outlook (new)’ in 2024, the method to configure inbox rules is the same for both the desktop application and webpage.

1.       Go to your email.

2.       Select the settings icon denoted by a gear wheel in the top right of the window.

3.       In the settings menu, select ‘Mail’ and then ‘Rules’ within the mail settings.

4.       This is where your inbox rules are. The play button rules the rule. The arrows control the order of how the rules will process. The pencil is to edit an already existing rule. The trash can is to delete a rule. To create a new rule, select the ‘Add new rule’ option at the top.

5.       You will be presented with options for rule creation. The first section is for the name of your rule. The second section is for choosing what will trigger the rule. The third section is for choosing what will happen when the rule is triggered. The ‘Stop processing more rules’ checkbox is for if multiple rules will be triggered at once and you want the current rule to be the last rule processed. This will rely on the order of the rules you have set, which is managed by the arrows. Once you are done building a rule, click ‘Save’ to save your rule.
