Installing Respondus Lockdown Browser
(Windows, MAC, Chromebook)

 

 

 

 

Installing LockDown Browser for a Windows Computer

1.    Log in as a local administrator with full rights. (Windows-Control Panel-User Accounts-"user account"-"Change your account type"-"Administrator").

2.    Go to https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=386457968

3.    Download the LockDown Browser installer package.

4.    Locate the installer package in your Downloads folder and run it.

5.    Accept all the default prompts to install LockDown Browser.

6.    Canvas will require that you first open a standard browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) log in, and then use the "Launch LockDown Browser" button on the quiz summary page.

7.    For Canvas "Classic" quizzes and Blackboard Learn quizzes, go to your desktop and double click on the "LockDown Browser" icon (A blue diamond with a gold padlock) to start LockDown Browser.

Installing LockDown Browser for a MAC Computer

1.    Log in as a local administrator with full rights (In System Preferences-Users & Groups, the user account must have "Allow user to administer this computer" enabled.)

2.    Go to https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=386457968

3.    Download the LockDown Browser installer package. Depending on the browser setting, it may download as "InstallLDBPackage64c-2-0-x-xx.zip" where "-x-xx" is the current version number.

4.    If the downloaded file did not automatically unzip, locate "InstallLDBPackage64c- 2-0-x-xx.zip" (usually in the Downloads folder), and double click on the file to start the Archiver to unzip the file.

5.    Locate the "Install Respondus LockDown Browser xxxxxxxxx.pkg" to start the actual LockDown Browser installer.

6.    Accept all the default prompts to install LockDown Browser.

7.    Canvas will require that you first open a standard browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) log in to the LMS, and then use the "Launch LockDown Browser" button on the quiz summary page.

8.    For Canvas "Classic" quizzes, go to Finder-Applications and double click on the "LockDown Browser" icon (a world globe with padlock) to start LockDown Browser.

Installing LockDown Browser for a Chromebook

1.    Log into the Chromebook and start Google Chrome

2.    Go to https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=386457968

3.    From the Chrome Web Store, select “Add to Chrome” to install the LockDown Browser Extension

4.    Log into Canvas and navigate to the exam that requires LockDown Browser

5.    The LockDown Browser extension will be started automatically when an assessment requires it.

 

Respondus LockDown Browser Software/Hardware Requirements

Respondus LockDown Browser is a client application installed on the local computer.

 

Operating Systems:

·       Windows: 11 and 10*

o   Includes x86 32 and 64bit processors and ARM 64bit processors using x86 emulation.

o   Windows 10/11 "S mode" is not a compatible operating system, nor can LockDown

o   Browser be obtained via the Windows App Store. At present, support for Windows 10/11 "S” Mode" isn’t on the roadmap for LockDown Browser.

o   Windows 10/11 "SE" is currently not a compatible operating system for LockDown Browser.

·       Mac: macOS 10.13 to 13.0+

·       ChromeOS

o   LockDown Browser for Chromebook minimally requires the version of ChromeOS that Google makes available via their Long Term Support (LTS) channel. For more information, visit: https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/search/label/LTS

o   Respondus recommends keeping your Chromebook updated to the most recent version that is available via Google’s ChromeOS “Stable” channel: https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/search/label/stable

·       iPadOS: 11.0+ (iPad only)

o   Must have a compatible LMS integration. The LockDown Browser iPad app is not compatible with Sakai LMS servers. All Sakai users will need to use a computer with a compatible operating system.

 

Memory:

·       Windows: 2 GB RAM (A minimum 4gb of available RAM is necessary when using LockDown Browser to take an exam that also uses a webcam.)

·       Mac: 2 GB RAM (A minimum 4gb of available RAM is necessary when using LockDown Browser to take an exam that also uses a webcam.)

 

Hard Disk Space:

·       Windows: 200 MB of free hard disk space

·       Mac: 200 MB of free hard disk space

 

Troubleshooting Respondus Lockdown Browser

 

Check for and install updates:

·       For Windows users, start Respondus LockDown Browser, select the “i” button from the toolbar, and then click “Check for Update”. The version will be displayed and you will be able to download a newer version if one is available.

·       For Mac users, start Respondus LockDown Browser, select “About” from the toolbar, and then click “Check for Update.” The version will be displayed and you will be able to download a newer version if one is available.

·       You can also update LockDown Browser by downloading and running the full installation program again.

 

Temporarily disable the computer’s spyware or anti-virus software

·       Spyware detection and anti-virus software may interfere with Respondus Lockdown Browser. Examples include AVG, Spyware Doctor, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Norton, McAfee, etc.
Temporarily disable the computer’s firewall.

·       If the computer’s firewall needs to remain enabled, make sure that the Lockdown Browser application is allowed full access to the Internet. This means you may need to enter the LockDown Browser executable file as an exception.

 

Close all open programs and applications

·       If using a PC, you can do this through the Task Manager. If using a Mac, you can do this through the Activity Monitor.

 

Make sure the Internet connection is stable

·       Respondus Lockdown Browser requires a constant Internet connection. If there’s any break in connectivity, a blank white screen may appear.

 

Make sure JavaScript and cookies are enabled

 

Make sure your browser’s pop-up blocker is turned off

 

Make sure you have an updated version of Java installed and that Java is enabled

·       If you experience freezing while Lockdown Browser is running, you may need to force shut down your computer by pressing and holding the power button. Once you restart the computer, launch Lockdown Browser again to continue from where you left off
